The Kenmore 90 Dryer Stopped Running Diagnosing and repairing the more common problems that plague GE front-loading dryers can be done by homeowners. The common problems that plague GE front-loaders are the same problems that plague all electric clothes dryers. The odds are that you already have most of the tools and test equipment that you need in your DIY tool kit. Before tearing into your dryer, always check for the simple problems: be sure that the dryer's power cord is plugged into the dryer wall receptacle and that the dryer's circuit breaker on the service panel has not tripped open. Dryer Does Not Start The most common cause for a dryers failure to start is a defective door switch. Door switches take a real beating with the opening and closing of the dryer door. The door switch is a normally open switch that closes when the door is closed. Replacing a door switch is a quick fix that requires only a few simple hand tools and a new switch that costs less than five dollars. To test it simply take a continuity reading through it with the door in the closed position. No continuity indicates a bad switch. Occasionally the dryer's electromechanical timers or solid-state controller can cause a failure to start. The dryer will have one or the other located behind the control panel. Electromechanical timers are motor-driven switches that send current to the proper dryer heating element according to the cycle selected. A solid-state controller is a printed circuit board similar to those contained in the back of television sets. Dryer Starts But Drum Does Not Turn The most common cause of a drum that doesn't turn is a broken drive belt, although a broken idler pulley could be the cause, as well. The drive belt is similar in design to the serpentine drive belts found under the hood of a modern automobile.

The dryer's drum drive belt runs around the drum, under the idler pulley and around the pulley on the dryer's drive motor. The spring-loaded idler pulley keeps proper tension on the belt so that there is enough friction between the drive belt and drum to turn the drum with a normal load of clothes in the drum. Dryer Does Not Heat If the dryer runs but does not get hot, the problem could be a defective heating element, high temperature cutout thermostat, temperature cycling thermostat thermal overload fuse. The thermostats and thermal fuse are located on top of the heating element enclosure and can be seen as soon as you open the top of the dryer. Thermostats are nothing more than temperature-operated switches. The temperature-cycling thermostat opens and closes repeatedly to keep the drum at the selected temperature. The high-limit thermostat is a safety device that keeps the temperature from reaching dangerously high levels if the temperature-cycling thermostat fails to open properly. The thermal fuse is another safety backup to keep the temperature from rising to a dangerous level if both the cycling thermostat and high limit-thermostat fail. Thermal fuses are not resettable and must be replaced once they open. The heating element itself is enclosed and located behind the drum, but can be tested from the top by using its exposed terminal. Thermostats, thermal fuses and heating elements are all tested by taking a continuity reading through them, but testing the operating temperatures of thermostats takes specialized equipment, so simply replace them if you suspect they are not opening properly. Noisy Operation A dryer that makes a lot of noise or squeaking sounds when operating is indicative of bad bearings. Loud squeaking is usually caused by a worn front-drum support glide. The support glides are rectangular-shaped strips of tough nylon that slip into notches on the front lip of the drum.

The glides act as a bearing surface between the front lip of the drum and the lip on the front panel of the dryer that supports the front of the drum. A thumping noise is usually indicative of a bad rear drum-support bearing. These bearings are self-centering bronze bearings located behind the drum that the shaft on the rear of the drum slips into. They are held in place with screws and easily replaced. Replacing the front-support glides or rear-support bearing are really simple, straightforward repairs that almost anyone can do. Acts like it’s drying on the display but no spinning, no motor sound, nothing. Drum spins freely by hand, but not multiple times like it’s freewheeling or anything. I’ve done the basic unplug 30 seconds, nothing, tried unplug 60 seconds, nothing, then tried open close door 6 times after unplug from a you tube video. Nothing. Just read I should leave it unplugged 30 minutes then try. You can take the top off and look. While it’s unplugged of course. There are 3 Phillips screws in the back of that plastic piece on top, take them out along with the plastic section.

Then there are 2 screws holding the top on, they’re pretty long and a Robinson (square) bit is best for these. Then the top lifts off from the front, up and towards you. The belt should be tight on the drum near the middle. Give it a tug and see. You may only find a mark where the belt used to be. There’s a switch near the motor that cuts power to it if the belt breaks causing the dryer to behave as you describe. Here's a link to a post on the wiring of a GE dryer motor. KoreanGuy 5.0 out of 5 stars My 8 years old GE electric dryer (Model dcvh680ejww) suddenly had no power. Turning it on did nothing, no lights, no sound. nothing. I did not want to pay for a repairman, so I decided to tackle the problem myself with absolutely no prior experience fixing a dryer. YMMV but this is what I did. First thing was obviously to check the breaker box and the outlet for power. They worked fine.

After watching some generic dryer repair videos on youtube, I proceeded to take a couple of hours just trying to figure out what to look for. I spent a long time looking for a standard fuse (there was none, this is kind of the fuse) and tried unsuccessfully to take the back of the dryer off (you're supposed to take just the top off on my GE model). I tried testing the other thermostats (kind of similar looking to this) before finally figuring out this hi-limit thermostat was probably the problem. This part is located on the outside top of the heating element on the back of my dryer with two wires connected. The wires slide off the prongs of the hi-limit (some force may be required to pull the wires off). Note: Space is tight to get to this without having to take the dryer front and drum off, so be very careful when replacing this. I dropped a screw and had to jimmy a magnet onto a wire coat hanger to get the screw back. So I ordered a new one, replaced it, and viola my dyer receives power and works now!Small words of advice.after you unplug the dryer, it is okay to yell and scream and get frustrated when your arms are too short to take the tension off the belt, or pull out the drum. If you must kick the dryer, do it on the side that sits near the washer, lol. Oh yeah, and while you have the entire dryer torn apart, clean it out with a vacuum. That little vent screen doesn't catch everything, and there was quite a bit of buildup in the dryer (most likely why this little part gave out). Overall, it was certainly worth the price, and easy to install, and doing it myself saved having to call a repair person, or buy a new dryer.A YouTube video and 45 minutes later, the dryer was up and running again. The image is the make and model of my dryer.Did I mention I saved hundreds of dollars? Yep, I did. I had already saved a search online. So far so good, I will update if needed.I used this pet and all was well.

PDF file in two languages, including English,Spanish, Length: 56 pages, Size: 1.8 Mb.
